Innovative Design at USC and Adobe collaborated to host createSC, an annual designathon focused on product design aiming to address relevant issues. I formed a team with my friends Sabrina Lu and William Han, and 48 hours after the prompt was released, we created a product that placed 3rd out of more than 100 teams.
Over 2 days, I helped my team with brainstorming/ideation, collecting data for user research, designing multiple screens for our product, and presenting our product to a panel of industry professionals.
The product we created is called Boppin, a music-sharing app designed to help users share and discover new music in the post-COVID-19 world. Check out our team’s process below, from ideation to final prototype!
The Prompt
The pandemic has fundamentally altered how we engage in social interactions. As we near the post-COVID era, how might we continue to share music experiences, discover new genres, and meet others who share our music taste in a safe yet interactive way?

Our Goals
Help People Form New Connections
During the COVID-19 lockdown, there was an extended period of time when people couldn’t gather together and share the joy of hearing their favorite artists live. While we don’t aim to replace the live crowd concert experience, we do want our app to help users meet new people and share the good vibes with others.
Facilitate Discovery of New Music
As seen through our user research, many people feel that finding new music can be challenging, and this is especially true during COVID-19. A major way that people find new music is through interacting with others and exchanging songs and playlists, so our app aims to address this need.
Create Longstanding Communities
Like other social media apps, we want to create a safe space for users to enjoy and discuss music together when an artist releases a new album or to appreciate nostalgic throwback tracks with a group of other users who share the same music taste.
